“What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.” – Māori proverb

I’m Grace, an associate advisor at Peterson Wealth. Money was a quiet source of stress in my life growing up, so when I came home from an LDS mission I started studying personal finance mostly to understand it for myself.

What I love about this work is watching something complicated turn simple for someone. Retirement holds a lot of decisions people have never had to make before, and most of them get easier once you can see how the pieces fit together. I’d rather someone leave a conversation knowing how their plan works than just knowing that it does.

At our firm’s BYU Education Week presentation on Tax Minimization, I sat a few seats from a woman whose husband had passed away a month earlier. He had always handled their finances. She took notes through the entire session, cheered when something clicked, and at one point teared up in appreciation for the knowledge she received.

She was in her eighties before anyone had walked her through any of this. What’s stayed with me is that finances are worth understanding together, while there’s time. A good explanation can matter to someone far more than we realize.

For the past three summers I’ve spent about a month with Humanitarian Experience for Youth, co-leading roughly twenty teenagers on service trips to West Virginia, Malaysia, and Belize. We’ve done home renovations, volunteered with blind, deaf, and special-needs communities, and last year built two classrooms for a middle school. We say we build places and people. The classrooms matter, but watching teenagers get outside of themselves is the point.

Once a month I teach a personal finance class for women my age. I started it because I remember how intimidating this all felt before anyone explained it to me, and there’s nothing better than watching someone realize it was never as far out of reach as they thought. Otherwise you’ll find me at a concert, talking someone into trying a new restaurant, or spending time with my family and friends.

A few questions

What do you enjoy about working with clients?
Everyone comes in with a completely different life behind them, and you can’t plan for someone until you know what they actually care about. I like the part of the process where that comes out, when someone stops talking about accounts and starts talking about the grandkids they want to be near, or the trip they’ve been putting off. That’s usually where the plan starts making sense. And a lot of people turn out to be further along than they think they are. It’s a good day when you get to tell someone that.
What would you want a prospective client to know about Peterson Wealth Advisors?
I’d want you to know what this looks like from the inside. Every advisor here has a different strength and they use each other constantly. I regularly watch one person’s question get worked over by three people before anyone lands on an answer. They’re excellent problem solvers, and in every conversation I’ve been part of, the question on the table is what’s actually best for the family involved.
What is your goal for every Peterson Wealth Advisors client?
My goal for every client is for them to understand their own plan well enough to explain it to someone else. Retirement brings a lot of decisions people have never had to make before, and I think the difference between following a plan and actually owning it is whether you can say it back in your own words. Plans get tested eventually, usually at the worst possible time. The clients who understand theirs are the ones who don’t panic.
